I’ve always known Down syndrome existed, but before AJ was born, my interactions with others with Down syndrome were practically non-existent.
At the time AJ was born, I had one friend on Facebook, someone I knew from my college years, who has a child with Down syndrome. I reached out to her on the night of AJs birth, and she was nothing short of amazing and reassuring.
During AJs early hospital stays we were visited by numerous people, many of whom were representing HADSA (Hawkeye Area Down Syndrome Association). It was through this organization that I learned that we were not alone and that there is a whole tribe of families out there who are loving and supporting – which is a big deal, especially when your at your breaking point, trying to find pants that fit in both the waist and length!
