Finding Joy in the Little Things

AJ loves doing laundry. He treats it like a pile of leaves. Jumping into it, laughing when we drop it on his head, throwing it into the air and letting it tumble all around him… he also thinks it’s hilarious to put pants on his head and pretend they’re his new hair.

Occasionally he will stop and shake a piece out and attempt to fold it and place it in a pile, but it’s often more about play and fun.

It’s the little things guys. By the time Averie was four I was scolding her for things like this. Telling her that it was time to do the laundry and to get chores done. AJ has been a strong reminder to slow down. Enjoy the little things. Let kids be kids.

Every minute doesn’t have to be about learning and progress. Let kids play. Playing is how they learn best anyway. Guess who learned how to put his pants on by playing in a pile of laundry? That play also brings with it the ability to relax and have fun. Life isn’t always about progress and getting to the next stage (I’m talking especially to my fellow enneagram 3s here).

Take a minute today to have some fun. Splash in the sink, dance to the music, jump in a pile of laundry, press your face against the glass and make weird faces, whatever it might be. Being silly and having fun are important for kids development, and the effects it has on us adults is pretty amazing too.
